Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader (AR) is widely used in schools to promote student reading.  Each students reading ability is one of the primary factors in academic success.  We want Landers Elementary School to be a school where students read!

The Accelerated Reader (AR) program allows us to assess students’ reading ability, assign books appropriate for student’s reading ability, and quiz students on their reading comprehension.  Students are asked to read books within their reading ability (this is the challenge component of AR).  Students are also asked to read a number of books based upon their reading ability (this is the quantity component of AR).  Accelerated Reader enables teachers to customize a reading program for individual students based upon each student’s reading ability.

We want all students to be successful in this program, and we are asking for parent support.  All of the goals set for the students are based upon each student reading approximately thirty minutes five times a week and testing at least every two weeks.  If your child’s teacher assigns reading as homework, this can count towards their thirty minutes per day, five days a week block of time.  Please encourage your child to read at least the minimum amount to ensure their reading improvement.  Each student’s progress towards their goals will be monitored through the computer program.

The LES library has more than enough AR books for every student but students may choose a book from home or the local library as well as long as there is a quiz for that particular book.  Parents and students can go online to check the reading level and point value of these books at www.arbookfind.com.  Students may take quizzes at home online at https://hosted134.renlearn.com/271182/ .  Student will just use their same login information that they use at school to access this site.

Accelerated Reader will also be tied into our Bingo for Books Night.  A student can earn one bingo card for every quiz passed, up to four cards per session.  Your child’s teacher will have an AR Log to record the books read and quizzes passed.  There will also be other reading incentives at the school to help motivate your child to read and take quizzes!
